Bonfire night and Beatles concerts
On Saturday I'm going to be playing in a Beatles tribute concert. I have to say, I was never a particular fan of theirs. Maybe because they were a bit before my time. But, as a musician, I have to respect what they did. Before the Beatles, most pop music was 3 chords (I, IV and V). Just like much country music still is today (and all Status Quo records!).
Anyway, I've been press-ganged into playing piano and keyboards for Saturday's gig. The chap who's organising it says he wants a nice Rhodes electric piano sound. Now, I don't (yet) have a DX7 (although I keep looking on eBay), but my keyboard does have a pretty decent "DX EP" sound, which I believe was sampled straight from the DX7's EP preset. I've used it before at gigs and it works well.
I've also been persuaded to sing "Let It Be". Which is the only Beatles song I can honestly say I actually like. I respect Lennon and McCartney for what they did, but I can take or leave much of their music. But I do like "Let It Be", so I've agreed to take the lead vocal on it.
Rehearsal is tonight, with a final run-through on the afternoon of the concert. The last gig I did was a lot of fun, so I'm sure this one will be as well.
Now, tonight is bonfire night, so I'm expecting some firecrackers to disrupt the rehearsal. We'll just have to turn everything up to 11 to drown things out.
